Artist Statement:

There are places where you lose track of how long you have been standing still. You notice the light first, then the depth beyond it, and for a moment your thoughts settle.

In “Immersed," Christi Meril layers oil and acrylic on linen until the space feels almost possible to enter. Long passages of blue may become trees rising around you or light descending through water. Glimpses of green and warmth come forward slowly. Where you find yourself can change each time you look.

The painting recalls the relief of being fully somewhere, with no need to hurry through it. Perhaps it brings back a place you love, or one you have yet to visit. “Immersed” gives you a moment to stay there.
