Artist Statement:

This artwork is a playground for my inner child's creative experiments. I incorporated various materials I always loved as a child such as glass beads and filled the landscape with textures by scraping rainbow pathways. My favorite part of the poem is the part where he mentions experimenting with a firefly. Playing with fireflies at my grandfather's ranch in Michoacán, Mexico is one of my favorite memories from my childhood, and in this painting my colorful inner child’s hand is reaching towards a dark sky full of stars that resemble fireflies. That instantly takes me back to that moment that filled me with wonder.

This entire piece is an altar to my inner child to revisit my creative process full of wonder and curiosity. This is the reason I keep creating and experimenting. To keep my inner child alive

Mariell Guzman is a multidisciplinary artist born in Zamora, Michoacán, and based in Dallas, Texas. After studying Studio Art at the University of Texas and the Ox-Bow School of Art in Michigan, her practice spans painting, sculpture, installation held in private collections internationally and large-scale public art. Guzman has completed murals across the U.S. and Mexico, working with clients such as Meow Wolf, American Express, Pepsi, Dickies, Samsung, and the State Fair of Texas.
