Artist Statement:

With a nontraditional art background, my practice has been shaped by experimentation and pushing the boundaries of traditional mediums. Working with clay opened my eyes to unconventional tools and connections, often drawing from past experiences.

My first creative job, decorating cakes at my father’s grocery store at age 12, later resurfaced in my ceramic work, where processing raw clay reminded me of buttercream. This link between past and present rekindled the confidence to create without rigid rules.

Inspired by the beauty and resilience of nature, my forms echo organic patterns—barnacles, lichens, and other growths—serving as a tribute to the wonder I find in the natural world.

Julia Stanger is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, painting, and experimental forms. A former New York fashion designer of 15 years, she turned to clay as a slower, more sustainable practice. Now based in Dallas, she balances community work with her own creative growth, drawing inspiration from nature’s imperfect beauty and the evolving experiences of womanhood and motherhood.
