Her father is from West Texas, and she spent part of her childhood there, where the land opens wide and tumbleweeds blow. She has returned often to the high desert of Texas and New Mexico. In 2024 and again in 2026, she and her husband spent a month in Santa Fe, adding to years of earlier visits. Even in those open landscapes, the energy of urban life remains with her.

In “Westbound”, warm coral and rust stretch beneath a broad field of turquoise and gray. A narrow passage of blue and gold drops through the painted space. Along the lower portion of the canvas, a dark sculptural band brings a sense of density and construction into the expansive view. Sweeping blue brushstrokes carry the eye onward.

Meril made the work with oil, acrylic, and charcoal gathered from a Ghost Ranch campfire. Her shaped paper sculpture, nails, and resin give the dark band a physical presence that changes with the light. The custom frame brings the painted and sculptural parts into one field.

The painting holds more than one kind of place at once. Its color and distance recall the western landscapes Meril knows well, while its compressed forms carry the pace and texture of the city. “Westbound” speaks to traveling with both: the places that draw us outward and the life we bring along wherever we go.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0423/2468/9057/files/ALG_Westbound_Christi_Meril_1_e05763ed-7bec-4313-b915-745764f4b2a7.jpg?v=1790980436
